Freedom doesn't come free! Chihuahua puppy's determined (and hilarious) bid to muscle up to cage bars is caught on camera

By Daily Mail Reporter

Any wretched soul who is innocently or unjustly put behind bars will tell you that their hope is constantly nourished by the dream of escape.

Little boys for decades have been inspired by breathtaking stories of brave Second World War servicemen ingeniously finding their way out of POW camps - and many of these sensational exploits have been turned into larger-than-life films.

But, not even in the wildest of dreams of a Hollywood director, has anyone thought of just muscling up to the bars and forcing their way through. Surely it would take superhuman strength.

Hello, what's this then: After a bit of sniffing about, the incarcerated Chihuahua puppy notices a gap in his enclosure. Almost immediately, the idea of escape forms

Initial success: After getting his head and unfeasibly large ears through the gap, our hero must be thinking that the rest is a walk in the park (his favourite thing). Even his cellmate seems to be taking an interest

Or perhaps just the sheer determination of a Chihuahua puppy.

A hilarious video posted on YouTube shows exactly that, a tiny Chihuahua taking on a permanent-looking set of bars and - after what seems like an eternity - proving that mind can triumph over matter.

The video, posted by the animal-loving Petsami, starts with the unidentified dog in an unidentified country eying up a small gap in the latticed bars that keep him and his larger cellmate from freedom.

With his tail betraying his excitement for escape, the white-and-tan puppy starts his cunning plan: that is, to simply force his tiny body through the even tinier opening.

Feeling the strain: The puppy realises that escape may take more than just the desire to do so. With his little ribs straining with the exertion, his cellmate is sensing an opportunity

Go on my son: Suddenly the cellmate is VERY interested in our hero's exertions as his bid to free himself from his new 'prison' is actually loosening the bars

After some squeezing and squinting the puppy gains some initial success by managing to get its head (and its unfeasibly large ears) through the gap.

Then comes an excruciating attempt to get the rest of his body through the opening - his paws straining against the bottom of the barrier as he manages to get his shoulders through and then a couple of ribs.

So far, no problem with the guards.

But disaster soon strikes when the puppy finds that - try as he might - his skeleton will simply not compress through the narrow opening, and he is literally caught in a tight spot. He can't go any further forward, and he can't go back.

Sorry I can't stay: As the intrepid puppy looks on - a massive metal barrier now acting as a most unflattering necklace - his opportunistic chum hits the road without even a 'by your leave'

Oh the ignominy: After all that work to free himself from his prison, the little jailbird ends up in the worst possible position. Thankfully it doesn't last long

So begins the show of brute strength that has made the Chihuahua feared throughout the animal kingdom.

The would-be escapee thrashes and kicks, writhes and licks his lips (apparently an integral part of his plan) until the entire enclosure comes free from the wall and allows a gap for his escape.

Unfortunately, the crafty inmate has a new problem - the entire front of his prison cell is between his second and third rib - with no evidence that it is going to come loose any time soon.

The little pooch's plight means nothing to his opportunistic cellmate, who take the opportunity to leg it.

Our hero is now left with a rather cumbersome necklace and not emotional support.
For the first time, panic seems to wash over the Chihuahua as he frantically tries to free himself from his new and uncomfortable prison.

Free at last: The Chihuahua puppy finally springs free from the gap in the barrier - having come the way he came - and now its a matter of what to do with his new-found freedom

I'll hunt you down... like a dog! Our hero doesn't quite know what do do at first, and then he remembers that he has a score to settle with the cellmate who left him high and dry

But his hysterical attempts only end up in the bars toppling over and his tale pointing skyward as his head is pressed into the ground.
Great!

Mercifully, the unflattering position only lasts a second or two before the Chihuahua's head pops out from the narrow opening and his new life on the lamb is ready to begin.

Incredibly, after all his industry in his bid to escape, the Chihuahua doesn't seem to know what to do with his new-found freedom.

Finally, he realises the gravity of his situation and takes off... until dinner time, at least.

By Leon Watson

Bounding along on his first time out for walkies, this furry little gundog puppy is one of the most angelic you'll ever see.

These pictures of Denver, a Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever, were taken by its proud owner Morgan Taylor and posted up on the internet.

And they got quite a reaction.

Morgan's photo album has been deluged with posters commenting on how lovable little Denver is ever since the toller was born in August last year.

One said: 'This is sooooooo cute! what a little cuddle bug.'

Another admirer, called Lisa, said to Denver: 'You've got it all going on - the paws, the face, and that freaking fur. You'll be able to run the world in no time.'

Morgan, from Vancouver, British Columbia, had posted the pictures of Denver out in the forest, in the park and at home on the photo sharing site Flickr.

The horrific moment a puppy was repeatedly hurled into the sea... before being rescued by a swimmer and given a new home

By Mike O'brien

Death wish: The unwanted puppy is hurled into the sea by a young man in Xiamen in China

In an act of appalling cruelty, a depraved young man hurls a defenceless, unwanted puppy into the sea.

The dazed puppy made it back to the shore whereupon the man threw it back in the water in Xiamen, in southern China's Fujian Province.

The sickening scene was captured by a passer-by strolling along the beach.

As the puppy kept coming back, the man, believed to be in his 20s, repeatedly hurled it back into the water.

Other people on the beach screamed at him to stop, but he ignored their pleas.

Eventually the puppy, by now exhausted, lost the strength to make it back to the beach and struglled on to a rock.

Dazed and exhausted: After making it back to the beach, only to be thrown again, the puppy struggles on to a rock

Rescued: The young man has left the scene and a swimmer picks up the dog before taking it to the beach

The man left the beach and the puppy was rescued by a swimmer.

He gave it a young woman who witnesses the sickening abuse.

One witness, Mr Wang, said: 'I thought the man had come to the beach for a walk with his pet dog, but what he did next surprised all of us.

'He held the little dog, leaned backward and threw the puppy out into the sea.

The terror is over: The puppy's new owner shows it to her friend

Let's go home: The woman promised the little dog would have a happy life

'The puppy was very small, it was around eight inches long.
'It landed about 20-30 yards away in the water.'

Mr Wang said he was stunned as the man threw the puppy into the sea five times, ignoring attempts by people around him to make him stop.

'That man was very cruel. He kept throwing the puppy into the water.'

The puppy's new owner promised to give the helpless animal a good home.

Sadly, the man who carried out the cruelty will probably go unpunished.

Rescued from the trash can: Harper the deformed puppy is back on his feet again

By Daily Mail Reporter

Back on his feet: Harper the deformed puppy is on the road to recovery after being plucked from the trash can

A deformed puppy rescued from a garbage bag has finally learnt to walk.

Little Harper was saved from a certain death when a woman in Sanford, Florida, saw a man selling pit-bull puppies outside a Save-A-Lot holding a squirming trash bag.

When she asked him what was in the bag he at first refused to show her but he finally handed over the bag containing a puppy so deformed it couldn’t walk or hold up its head.

Flat out: Harper was born with a condition commonly called 'swimmer puppy syndrome', which meant she had a flattened chest wall and could not walk or hold her head up

Bright eyes: The little dog is enjoying a new lease of life after his traumatic ordeal

Veterinarians and shelter workers all agreed the dog should be euthanized.

But all was not lost for little Harper, Erica Daniel, a regular at the local animal shelter, stepped in and decided to take the puppy home for one full and final day of love and affection.

She told Today.com: 'I had to show her what it was like to be loved.

'I’d planned on taking her home that night, letting her sleep in bed with us, and having her humanely euthanized in the morning.'

Harper’s speedy recovery began on that first day with Daniel. The puppy had been born with a condition commonly dubbed “swimmer puppy disorder,” and most dogs afflicted with it don’t survive.

The disorder, pectus excavatum, causes puppies to lie flat on their chests with their legs perpetually splayed out, as if they were humans — or perhaps frogs — swimming through water.

'The longer she was like that, the more she stayed in that position,' Daniel said. 'It felt like rigor mortis — like her legs might break.'

Deformed: When Harper was born her limbs splayed out so her chest was on the ground and she couldn't stand up or even raise her head

Fighting fit: Vets and shelter workers said she should be put down but eleven weeks later the pit bull puppy is going strong

Water baby: She was born with a condition dubbed 'swimmer puppy syndrome' which causes them to lie flat on their chests

Daniel persevered, continually massaging Harper’s tight muscles, hoping to alleviate at least some of her stiffness and pain.

Within just a few hours, Harper started lifting her head and looking around. Her front legs became more limber as well, so much so that she tried using them to walk and pull herself around.

Convinced that this determined little dog needed a second opinion, she cancelled the following morning’s appointment and made a new, hopeful one with a veterinarian at the University of Florida.

At first, the vet described the reasons Harper probably would need to be put to sleep. The list included the likelihood of degenerative bone disease, brain abnormalities and a severe heart murmur.

But after tests they found her organs were functioning fine, and she had no heart murmur or serious brain abnormalities. The medical conditions she did have required treatment — but nothing that warranted putting her to sleep.

Rehabilitated: The puppy can now walk on nearly all surfaces but still needs lots of sleep to keep her energy up

Naturally curious: Most dogs with Harper's condition don't survive but the puppy has shown fighting spirit and has defied the odds

Today, Harper is not only alive but she’s thriving. The frisky gray puppy is gaining more and more mobility each day, to the astonishment of onlookers and medical professionals.

The Hip Dog Canine Hydrotherapy & Fitness in Winter Park, Florida., heard about Harper and donated free hydrotherapy and massage therapy to the puppy.

She responded well to the treatment, and before long she actually started walking.

'She started out on grass, then carpet, then concrete. She still can’t walk on tile or hardwood floors, but she’s getting there,' Daniel said.

Bev McCartt, a Hip Dog therapist, explained said swimming has helped teach Harper what her natural gait should be.

'Her brain kicked in and by the end of her first session, she was like, ‘Oh, I can do this,’' McCartt said. 'She’s a walking miracle. She’s a real testament to a dog’s determination to get up and just go.'

Today, Harper is about 11 weeks old, and she’s holding her own playing with the seven other dogs at Daniel’s home. Daniel estimates that Harper should be ready to be adopted in about a month — that is, if she can handle parting with her.

'The whole world was against her, but she’s such a fighter,' Daniel said. 'She’s a blessing. She’s awesome.'

Earlier this year Daniel set up Dolly’s Foundation, named after another dog she rescued. The organisation rescues and rehabilitates homeless, neglected and abused American Pit Bull Terriers and other bully breed dogs, and it has plenty of puppies and dogs available for adoption.

The puppy was with Pauline at the franchise the family run, Metal Supermarket in a trading estate in West Bromwich, West Midlands, when motorcyclists stopped.

One of them leapt off the bike and grabbed the dog from a play pen before the pair sped off.

She said: 'Alfie is a pedigree, and he's only 16 weeks old.

Playfighting: the little female dog Rosie takes a nip to the neck from her male companion

It turns out pretening to be dead isn't just an fun trick for human children - but little pooches as well.

A cute pup Rosie scares her doggy friend when, after a little nip to the neck, she plays dead.

Still, it has already attracted hundreds of Youtube hits after only being uploaded in the past 24 hours.

Oh dear me: reacting the pup feigns severe injury, falling to the ground

Such play - so reminiscent of that of young children - makes one think of about just how much DNA we share with our canine friends.

Experts say young dogs play to build up their own survival skills and is an important part of their development.

Dogs in the wild have to hunt and to protect themselves and these skills can be seen as early as puppyhood through play.

Although domesticated dogs will never have to hunt for their own food, such play is rooted in their inborn animal instincts.

The person who uploaded the video commented that apparently this kind of attention seeking isn't unusual for the dog.

I'm dead: Here she lies for a few seconds, arousing worry from her companion. The style of play is very reminiscent of the way young children play

Tricked ya: After she makes her point heard, up she trots, playing again

Bored teenager sparks outrage after pegging puppy up on washing line and posting photos on Facebook

By Daily Mail Reporter

Cruel: Filipino Jerzon Senador pegged his puppy on a clothes line and posted these photographs of the struggling animal on Facebook

A Filipino teenager has sparked outrage after pegging his puppy out on a clothes line and posting pictures of the helpless animal on Facebook.

Jerzon Senador, from Calamba, Laguna, is likely to face animal cruelty charges after deciding to carry out the stunt because he was bored.

The teenager suspended the struggling puppy from the skin on its back as he took photographs from different angles.

Helpless: The teenager, from Calamba, Laguna, decided to carry out the stunt because he was bored

But he later took the images down and issued a public apology after he was swamped with angry messages from internet users.

More than 3,000 Facebook members have joined a campaign group - 'Jerzon Senador the Animal Abuser' - calling for him to be prosecuted and the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has launched an investigation.

Animal lovers also took to Twitter to voice their outrage at the stunt.

One user, KenTuriano, said: 'Hang Jerzon upside down on a clothes line.'

Another, IamRHEA16, added: 'Well I guess you can't even go outside now because of your abusive act.'

Backlash: But the stunt could now land him with animal cruelty charges after angry internet users bombarded him with emails

Forlorn: The puppy's owner has since taken the pictures down and apologised for what he did

Mr Senador begged people for forgiveness after removing the pictures from his page.

He said: 'To all animal lovers and to people all over the world please read this.

'I would like to ask for forgiveness for the wrong I've done against my dog. I hope you could forgive me and I promise it will never happen again.'

In May 2010, a student from the University of the Philippines was fined 2000 Philippine peso (£28) and sentenced to two months' community work for killing a cat inside the university campus and bragging about it on his blog.

The case was the first successful conviction of someone accused of animal cruelty in the Philippines.

Furless and friendless: Flaky the puppy who was tied to a fence and left to die

By Daily Mail Reporter

Sore: Flaky has a bad conditions of demodectic mange, which can be cured with months of bathing using special soothing shampoos

Sometimes all a puppy needs is a quick bath to get his fur shining again but Flaky is going to need months of careful attention from a loving new owner to nurse him back to health.

The six-month old the Staffordshire bull terrier has a skin condition so severe it has left him almost entirely bald.

He was found abandoned, tied to a fence in Wyke Beck Woods, Leeds, West Yorkshire, on May 16 and rescued by the RSPCA.

Flaky, so-named because of his condition, has demodectic mange, a harsh skin disease caused by a mite which strips away his fur.

RSPCA inspector Rachel Oprysk said: 'This poor dog is in a terrible condition and it will take many months for him to recover.

'He's suffering from demodectic mange which is a severe skin condition and is almost completely bald apart from a patch of hair on the back of his head and between his shoulders. His nails were also overgrown.

'Someone has allowed him to get into this state over a long period of time.

'It would seem they've then gone on to abandon him.'

Mandy Miller, manager at the RSPCA animal centre in Bradford, West Yorkshire, where Flaky is being looked after, said: 'His skin is going to take quite some time to heal.

Furless fried: Flaky the Staffordshire terrier is looking for a new home after being abandoned in woodland in Leeds where a rare skin condition ate away at his coat

'You can get different levels of demodectic mange, some dogs have a bit of fur missing, but he has lost almost all of his.

'He is a really sweet dog, he's very affectionate, but he is feeling a bit sorry for himself at the moment.

'I think he must be in quite a lot of discomfort and his feet were swollen when he came in, as well as his sore fur.

'He has been through a long ordeal and I am sure he will start to perk up a bit after a while but he just needs a bit more time to feel better.'

Mandy explained that Flaky is currently on antibiotics to ease the pain caused by his skin condition and he will also receive regular bathing using special shampoos to try and rectify it.

Looking for loving owners: Flaky is currently being cared for at an RSPCA centre in Bradford, but needs long-term care to get back to health

It is thought that Flaky's fur would usually be a brindle colour, but because of his severe loss of fur it is difficult to tell.

He was not microchipped or wearing anything by which to identify him.

He was taken to vets and then to RSPCA Bradford & District Animal Centre where he's receiving the care and attention he needs.

Inspector Oprysk said: 'This is not going to be a quick thing.

'He'll need months of special baths to get the skin condition under control.

'The good thing is he's now getting that treatment and hopefully, in due course, the animal centre will be able to find him the sort of home all dogs deserve.'

They're so sweet: Meet Milky Way, Mars, Flake, Mini egg, Yorkie and Cadbury... the abandoned puppies named after chocolate

By Daily Mail Reporter

Fun: Mini Egg the Jack Russell plays with his namesake. Staff at the centre decided to name the abandoned pup and his pals after different chocolates in celebration of Easter

These six abandoned Jack Russell puppies have all been named after chocolate Easter eggs.

Mini egg, Flake, Mars, Milky Way, Yorkie and Cadbury spent the day playing with empty Easter egg boxes with their names on.

But staff were careful to make sure the playful six-week-old puppies didn't get hold of any chocolate - because it would only take 50g of plain chocolate to kill them.

Chris Slight, of the Dogs Trust centre in Evesham, Gloucester, said the puppies were given the boxes because they were 'full of beans' and added that they all needed a good home.

'They're typical Jack Russell Terriers with busy minds and bodies, so we've been finding ways to keep them entertained,' he said.

'Empty Easter egg boxes are proving to be a massive hit but they can't have the chocolate. They're happy to clamber in and out of the boxes and play peekaboo.'

He added that the puppies were all looking for new homes with owners who would look after them during the day and help continue with their training.

Chocolate contains the chemical theobromine, which is extremely toxic to man's best friend and can cause chocolate poisoning.

This can lead to serious health complications and even death for dogs.

Chris Laurence, Dogs Trust Veterinary Director, warned: 'If your egg is missing and you suspect the dog as the culprit, look out for any of the following symptoms; vomiting containing blood, a sore tummy, excessive thirst, excitability, drooling, slow heart rate and in the later stages, epileptic-type fits.

'If your dog is displaying any of these signs then take him immediately to your vet. The good news is that if caught early enough the symptoms of theobromine poisoning can be treated.'

He added that many pet stores stocked good ranges of tasty treat alternatives to Easter eggs - including chews and tripe sticks.

Anyone who would like to give a puppy a home this Easter should contact Dogs Trust Evesham on 01386 830613.

Puppy love: Donna Neville, 23, and Vicki Gear, 28, will care for the pups until they are able to find a good home for them

Ewe have got to be kidding! The 'puppy' born to a SHEEP

By Daily Mail Reporter

'Miracle': The sheep/dog and the ewe that allegedly gave birth to him in Shaanxi Province, China
His 'sheep dog' even plays like a hound.

Vets say it’s impossible - but to Chinese farmer Liu Naiying his birth is a miracle.

For Mr Liu insists one of his sheep has given birth to a dog

The 'puppy' has wool like a lamb but its mouth, nose, eyes, paws and tail look more like a dog's.

The birth has prompted thousands to flock to his farm in Shaanxi Province to see for themselves.

Mr Liu told how he found the unusual baby animal shortly after it was born in one of his fields.

‘I was herding the sheep, and saw a sheep licking her newborn lamb on the grassland. The lamb was still wet,’ he said.

‘When I went up close to check on the lamb I was shocked because it looked so weird, like a cross between a sheep and a dog.

Strange: The 'puppy' has wool like a lamb but it's mouth, nose, eyes, paws and tail look more like a dog's

‘I was a bit frightened, as I've been raising sheep for 20 years and had never seen such a creature.’

Yue Guozhang, a researcher at Xi'an City Animal Husbandry Technology Centre, said sheep and dogs were different species.

‘It's not possible that a sheep could become pregnant with a puppy,’ he said. ‘It's likely that this is just an abnormal lamb.’
